MUSIC OF THE WEEK | BETH DITTO

Being a use Gossip fan, I was naturally compelled to listen to Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto's new solo stuff. Now, as much as I love the rad electronic punk beats of the Gossip, I have to say this appeals a whole lot more to me. If you didn't know already, Beth Ditto was featured in Simian Mobile Disco's "Temporary Pleasure" album on one of the albums greatest songs, "Cruel Intentions." The song is made of simple, yet complex beats with Ditto's characteristically sensual voice. If you're a fan of this song then you will definitely be a fan of Ditto's solo stuff. The beats are simple, pumping to a more electronic sound than the latter punk rock noise of her band. Ditto's voice is amazing for this type of music and even more so than - dare i say? - what she's done for Gossip, in my opinion. Her voice brings a sensual quality that accentuates the overall sexual feel of the music. My favorite song off her new EP is definitely "Good Night, Good Morning." The song just exudes sexuality with lyrics like: I may be by myself some times, but I won't be by myself tonight.

The video featured in this post is also from her new EP. The song is also sensual with a flare of daring come-at-me-if-you-can attitude. If you've ever seen Madonna's "Justify my Love" video you'll notice some similarities to Ditto's latest. Yes, the video is a tribute to Madonna, something that has been a popping trend lately - queue Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." Unlike Gaga, however, Ditto makes her inspiration clear and more than copy such, acknowledges and reveres established Queen of Pop. You can find more information about Beth Ditto's solo stuff here.
